Seamless gutters are formed from a single continuous coil of aluminium on site, cut to the exact length of each run, so the only joints in the whole system are at corners and downspout outlets. Sectional gutters arrive in pre-cut lengths and are joined every few feet. Every seam is a place a gutter eventually leaks, because the sealant at a joint moves differently from the metal around it through a freeze-thaw cycle. Taking the seams out removes most of those failure points. It also means the gutter is made to fit your house, rather than your house being fitted to standard lengths, which is why the runs sit flush to the fascia.

For most houses, yes — and the gap is narrower than people expect. Seamless costs more up front because it has to be formed on site, but the sealed joints in a sectional system are the part that fails first, and re-sealing them is a recurring cost rather than a one-off. Sectional still makes sense on a short run, a detached garage, or a repair matched into an existing sectional system. On a full house, the labour is close to identical either way, so the material difference is really what you are deciding on.

Total footage first, then the number of corners and downspouts, the gutter size, the material and colour, and how reachable the roofline is — a second-storey run over a deck costs more to install than a single storey with clear ground underneath. Fascia that has to be repaired first is the item that most often moves a quote. Ask any estimate whether it includes removal and disposal of the old gutters, new hangers, and gutter apron behind the gutter. Those three are usually the difference between two numbers that look like they are for the same job.

Roughly one downspout per 30 to 40 feet of gutter run is the working rule, adjusted for how much roof drains into that run and how steep it is. Long runs with a single outlet are the most common reason a correctly sized gutter still overflows. Roof area matters more than gutter length. Aluminium seamless gutters generally last twenty years or more, and the hangers and corner sealant usually need attention before the gutter itself does. What shortens that is standing water from a poor slope and ice loading over the winter. In the snowbelt the failure we see most is not corrosion — it is gutters pulled off the fascia by the weight of ice. That is a fastener and slope problem, and it is fixable. If yours are sagging, the gutter may well still be sound.
