How Do You Install Attic Baffles?
To install attic baffles, staple a baffle into each rafter bay that has a soffit vent below it, starting at the top plate of the exterior wall and extending 18–24 inches above the planned insulation line. The baffle presses against the underside of the roof decking, creating an open channel so air can travel from the soffit vents up toward the ridge vent. Insulation then gets pushed snug against the baffle — never past it — so the airflow path stays open.

What Attic Baffles Do (and Where They Go)
Attic baffles — also called rafter baffles, soffit baffles, or vent chutes — are simple channels, usually foam or rigid plastic, that keep insulation from blocking the intake vents in your soffits.
Your attic ventilation works like a chimney: cool air enters low through the soffit vents and exits high through the ridge. Baffles protect the low end of that system. Without them, insulation slumps into the soffit cavity, the intake chokes, and airflow stops — even if your ridge vents are perfect.
In western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia, that trapped, humid air has nowhere to go through our long freeze-thaw winters. Moisture condenses on the underside of the roof decking, and over the years the sheathing softens, delaminates, and grows mold.
Installing Attic Baffles: Step by Step
Here’s how to install attic baffles properly, whether it’s part of a roofing project or an insulation upgrade:
- Find every soffit vent. From inside the attic, locate each rafter bay that has an intake vent below it. These are the bays that need baffles.
- Clear the eave. Pull back any insulation that has drifted into the soffit cavity so the vent opening is fully exposed.
- Position the baffle. Set the baffle against the underside of the roof decking, with its bottom edge reaching the top plate of the exterior wall.
- Staple it in place. Fasten through the baffle flanges into the rafters or decking every 6–8 inches. It should sit tight enough that insulation can’t slip behind it.
- Extend above the insulation line. The baffle should rise 18–24 inches higher than the finished insulation depth so future top-offs don’t bury the channel.
- Seal the wind wash. Fit a piece of rigid insulation or a baffle with a built-in dam at the eave so cold air washes up the chute — not sideways through your insulation.
- Reinstall insulation up to the baffle. Snug against it, never over it.
On paper it’s a stapler-and-patience job. In practice, the eaves are the tightest, most awkward part of any attic — and that’s exactly where the work happens.

That said, if you’re re-insulating or re-roofing anyway, many contractors baffle every bay along the eaves so future soffit vent additions are already protected, and so insulation stays out of the eaves entirely.
