How to measure your roof pitch (step by step)
You can get a close read on your roof pitch with a level, a tape measure, and a pencil. Here’s how to measure roof pitch safely from inside the attic or at the eave.
- Set a 12-inch mark on your level. Measure 12 inches from one end and mark it. That’s your run.
- Hold the level against a rafter or the roof’s underside. Rest one end on the surface and bring the level bubble to center so it sits perfectly horizontal.
- Measure straight down at the 12-inch mark. Measure from the 12-inch mark on the level down to the roof surface. That distance, in inches, is your rise.
- Read the result as rise over 12. A 4-inch drop means a 4/12 pitch. A 6-inch drop means 6/12, and so on.
